Amlaniya

Association for Education and Healing through Labor and Handicrafts

Amlaniya – A story of civic, community, and national initiative.

At the heart of Kibbutz Shamir in the Upper Galilee, a unique volunteer center operates, fostering love for country, state, people, and education. It is a place where labor and craftsmanship become a mission and a source of healing.

Originally, Amlaniya was intended to be a community space for quiet activity.

Tal Amlani, one of the two founders, a member of Kibbutz Shamir, an entrepreneur, combat veteran, and master handyman, leveraged his skills and love for teaching traditional handcrafts and education, creating a space for creative expression and intergenerational encounters.

As the Israeli reality changed, the purpose of the place evolved. Starting on October the 7th, within days, the Center became a hub of combat support operations. Volunteers came from all layers of the community, equipment was donated, and reservists received tailored support for all their needs.

Thus, a sense of belonging was fostered, along with civic pride and a strong desire to contribute and lend a helping hand.

More information about Amlaniya’s activities during the war is available in the following article: “The Secret Sewing Room in Kibbutz Shamir”.

With the ceasefire in the northern region coming into effect, and with the desire to preserve and enhance the mission and work, Amlaniya Association was officially established in memory of Shahar and Nira Amlani, the late siblings of Tal.

This is when Dror Yakubovich came into the picture – a retired police officer and founder and CEO of the Association.

Under his leadership, the Center was established as a value-driven community initiative intended to transform personal pain into a light of action, education, and hope. The purpose of the Association: to provide every individual – children, youth, adults, at-risk teens, war-injured, and Defense Ministry disabled veterans – with a safe space to act, develop, create, repair, and build meaning through hands-on work.

Among the members of the General Assembly and the Board of Directors are senior educators, military officers, police officers, and experts from various liberal professions.

The Center occupies approximately 500 m² of industrial building space converted into galleries, plus an additional 200 m² of workspaces, where workshops are held in various fields, including sewing, woodworking, metalworking, glass, leather, goldsmithing/jewelry, and electrical appliance repair, to name a few. Activities are conducted in small groups under the guidance of certified instructors, with strict adherence to safety rules, social integration, and a sense of belonging.

During the day, the workshop will serve organized groups – schools, at-risk youth, disabled veterans of the IDF and security forces, and more. In the evening, the workshop will function as a community center open to the public.

The Upper Galilee Regional Council is coordinating with us regarding student registration for the start of the school year. We plan to open on September 1 to welcome at-risk youth groups.

Introductory workshops will begin next month as part of an informal summer program for the children of Kibbutz Shamir.

To operate the Center on an ongoing basis, we need support for purchasing raw materials, equipment such as worktables, chairs, power tools like sanders and grinders, hand tools such as hammers, chisels, various files, 3D printers, and more.
Additionally, contributions will allow us to complete the renovation of the building and workshops to the highest standard.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Dror Yakubovich, Founder and CEO
